The Joy of Volunteering With Your Kids

As a member of the Living Water Trips team, I know how the opportunity to serve thirsty communities can have a major impact on our lives and our faith. My most profound Living Water Trips experiences have been volunteering alongside my family.

I remember taking my oldest son to Guatemala on his first Living Water Trip. He had spent the previous two years studying Spanish and was able to speak to the community members with ease.

He met a boy around his age, and the two quickly became fast friends. The boy carried around a wallet that was empty except for a picture of a boy that looked just like him. My son soon learned that his friend had a twin brother who had died because of unsafe water a few months earlier.

My son, who didn’t express his emotions often, felt overwhelmed with sadness. While it hurt my heart to see him so distraught, I was so proud of him. He finally got it! He understood what it meant to have his heart broken for a cause that was so near and dear to the heart of God.

Since then, my oldest son has been on five more Living Water Trips to Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua. Last year, my middle son was old enough to join us for his first Living Water Trip, which inspired him to advocate for the thirsty with his high school baseball team.

This summer, we’re taking our entire family to Guatemala. Our daughter is excited to experience what her brothers have talked about for years.

As a mom, there is no sweeter joy than seeing your children choose to walk faithfully with the Lord and serve those who Jesus loves. It makes me very happy to know that the seeds we planted nearly a decade ago—when we started serving with Living Water International—are bearing fruit in our children’s lives.

Parents, if you are considering taking a Living Water Trip as a family, I can say from personal experience that it’s one of the best decisions you can make. We still have some amazing opportunities available for 2020! If you’re interested, let us know.
