Living Water works directly with the community to provide safe water through different water solutions, such as water wells. Partnering with the community from the beginning, empowers leaders and helps create an enabling environment that will better ensure the sustainability of the well. Living Water believes that it is more likely for the water system to continue benefiting over time if certain key steps are taken before starting each water project. Once communities have been mobilized and the stakeholders have agreed upon the water point location and type of system, the community is prepared for the water point implementation. Volunteer teams from Living Water Trips as well as our Living Water staff work side by side with the community members to construct the water point. Together, they spend 4-5 days learning firsthand the impact that safe water can have on a community and understanding the benefits of improved hygiene and sanitation practices. Post construction of all water points involve the confirmation of safe water through water testing for E. coli, nitrates/nitrites, pH, hardness, total dissolved solids, and turbidity. Other parameters may be tested if hydrogeological data, local law, or historical knowledge demonstrate a cause for concern.
In addition to working closely with the community prior to and during construction, the program recognizes the importance of creating and/or strengthening water committees at the local level to lay foundations for long-term success. For this reason, water committees are established and/or trained in every community to help ensure that ongoing services are available. Community leaders are trained in water point management and care, chlorination methods, tariff collection and basic pump repair. This is all accomplished in coordination with the local government and partners.
To improve physical health, people must practice healthy habits that need to be sustained over time. This begins by learning what those healthy habits should be and having a supporting environment that will maintain those habits. Hygiene lessons are used to encourage all community members, students and staff to become involved in hygiene and sanitation education and subsequently adopt improved hygiene and sanitation habits. Soon, communities are empowered to develop and carry out their own plans to improve their situation. For the younger children and family members, Living Water provides a program called the Living Well Club. It is a series of hygiene lessons that are in conjunction with Biblical truths related to one’s health. Each lesson has a craft or game that reinforces the main message of the lesson. All hygiene and sanitation programming are implemented in coordination with the water point construction. The program is offered to all community members, local health clinics, and elementary schools.
In this section, we will outline the activities around partnering with local churches.
Working with the local churches allows congregations and Living Water International to not only demonstrate the gospel but provide an opportunity to proclaim it as well. Churches can obtain a vision for social action through the provision of safe water and improved sanitation services in the community. The Living Water International–Honduras staff works closely with clusters of local churches to conduct workshops in which they consider how best to convene and begin mobilizing individual community churches. WASH-training activities are conducted in the participating clusters along with orality, Bible-storying workshops and leadership training. This empowers church members to share their faith through example and storytelling. Together with the communities and local government, the churches and Living Water International – Honduras plans and develops a strategy for positive change in communities. During the hygiene and sanitation training, the Honduras staff have regular opportunities to share Biblical truths connected to healthy living and at each water point dedication, the gospel will be presented.
