Liberia

Pursuing the physical, spiritual, and social flourishing of all people who lack safe water.

About Liberia

Welcome to Liberia, a vibrant West African nation nestled along the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean coastline. Bordered by Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, and Guinea, Liberia boasts a rich history and diverse culture. Though marred by past challenges, including a devastating civil war and the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak, Liberia is on a resilient path of recovery and development. With a population of approximately 4.5 million, including a youthful demographic, the country’s urban and rural communities thrive with unique character and traditions. Monrovia, the bustling capital city, shines as the heart of opportunities, amenities, and growth, attracting both residents and visitors alike.

Our work

In the wake of Liberia’s post-war era, Living Water International embarked on a mission to empower communities with safe water access, sanitation, and hygiene education. Collaborating with local governments, we’ve successfully constructed and rehabilitated wells, ensuring clean and sustainable water sources. Our Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach has empowered individuals and communities to take charge of their hygiene and sanitation practices, fostering lasting positive change. With over 1,500 completed water projects and counting, Living Water Liberia remains steadfast in its commitment to transform lives through holistic WASH solutions.

At the heart of our efforts lies the commitment to providing reliable and safe water access. From drilling boreholes to rehabilitating wells, we prioritize the installation of sustainable water systems that withstand the test of time. By involving women and girls in technology selection and design, we promote gender equity while addressing specific needs. Rigorous water quality tests ensure that the water delivered to communities is not only abundant but also safe for consumption. With partnerships with relevant ministries and continuous community engagement, we’re dedicated to enhancing both the availability and quality of water resources.
Clean water is a stepping stone to better sanitation and hygiene practices. Through the CLTS approach, we empower communities to embrace behaviors that prevent diseases and promote well-being. Our programs encourage the construction of latrines in homes, schools, clinics, and churches, effectively improving overall sanitation conditions. Hygiene education sessions and outreach initiatives play a pivotal role in promoting health-conscious practices, while institutional sanitation facilities in schools and health centers further enhance the well-being of communities.
Recognizing the pivotal role of local churches and community mobilization, Living Water Liberia fosters a collaborative approach for impactful transformation. Local churches, deeply rooted in their communities, serve as partners in promoting WASH-focused change. Church leaders and community members are equipped with skills and knowledge, working hand in hand to champion water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. Through visionary church mobilization and grassroots engagement, we cultivate sustainable solutions that transcend WASH, positively influencing broader community development.
Our endeavors are guided by a commitment to more than physical well-being; we are dedicated to sharing the gospel of hope. As we partner with communities, we also recognize the vital role that faith plays in fostering enduring change. Through church engagement, leadership training, and community-driven efforts, we aim to promote spiritual and physical flourishing, leaving a legacy of transformation that extends far beyond water access and hygiene practices.

Long-Term Goal / Vision

Looking ahead, Living Water International Liberia envisions a future where communities across Liberia flourish with improved WASH infrastructure. By 2024, we will transition our efforts to the Buu-Yao district in Nimba County while exploring expansion to Bong and Montserrado Counties. Our journey continues, driven by the belief that sustainable change is possible, and that every drop of clean water and every hygienic practice leads to brighter tomorrows for all Liberians.
