SAMUEL’S STORY: A BRIGHTER TOMORROW

“I’ll never forget that moment—turning the tap for the first time and watching the water flow freely.”

For this month's CONNECTION:

While artistic license has been taken, Samuel, the St. George Special School, and the events in this audio reading are based on a real story of impact depicted by Living Water Kenya colleagues.

“My name is Samuel Mutunga, and I’m 15 years old. I study at the St. George Special School in Nyakach, Kenya.”

“Some of my friends have epilepsy, others have autism, cerebral palsy, or physical disabilities—like me. We all face different challenges, but we want the same thing: a better future.”

“Water was once our greatest struggle. Every day, we traveled long distances to collect water from the river. In my wheelchair, getting through the rocky, uneven path was almost impossible.”

“My teachers were a huge help. Working together, we would haul heavy containers filled with river water back to school.”

“The river water was dirty. It had a strange smell, tasted bad, and made us sick. Many of us missed school because of awful stomachaches and fever.”

“Still, we didn’t give up. Even on the hardest days, I reminded myself why I was here—to learn and grow. My friends and I supported one another, but deep down, I dreamed of a day when water wouldn’t be such a burden.”

“Then one day, Living Water Kenya came to our school. They walked our rugged paths and saw the river we depended on. They listened to our teachers and sat down to speak with us, too. They promised to help.”

“And they kept that promise.”

“Soon, we saw the change. A borehole was drilled, pipes were laid, tanks were installed, and several tap stands were built throughout our school.”

“Finally, we had safe water. I couldn’t believe it.”

“I’ll never forget that moment—turning the tap for the first time and watching the water flow freely.”

“Everything shifted.”

“We started a school garden, growing fresh vegetables for our meals. Our classrooms became cleaner, and our bathrooms were transformed.”

“I no longer worry about illness from dirty water or losing hours going to the river. Now, I can focus on my studies.”

“Safe water didn’t just meet a basic need—it gave me back my time, energy, and hope. It lifted a heavy weight off my shoulders and made it easier to believe in myself. I can finally see the potential everyone has always seen in me.”

“Today, our school feels alive. We laugh more, learn better, and dream bigger. While Living Water Kenya played a vital role, I know this transformation would not have been possible without our teachers, families, and every student who refused to give up. Like me.”

“Every time I take a sip, I think about how much has changed. Safe water gave us a chance to grow, to learn, and to build a brighter tomorrow.”

“Thank you to everyone who stood with us. You’ve changed our school, our lives, and our future.”
