Meet the family behind the story.
You’ve heard a little about the Simon Cocha community in Peru. But no one tells their story better than someone who lived it.
Juan Nochomata, a 36-year-old fisherman, knows firsthand how heavy life without safe water can be. And what it feels like when everything changes.
“The problem with collecting river water was its poor quality. During the summer, the water became cloudy and often smelled bad. We tried to boil the water and filter it, but most of the time we were unable to do so.
Another constant danger was snakes. One day, while I was resting at home, my children went to collect water to prepare lunch. On the way, they encountered a large and dangerous snake called a mantona, which attacked them and bit one of my children on the foot. My son was crying in pain and fear. I was terrified he would die. When we arrived at the health center, the nurse treated him immediately. By God’s grace, my son recovered, but the experience was deeply shocking and frightening for our entire family.”
"Having safe water is a dream come true for us. We will no longer suffer. Safe water will improve our lives, especially the children's lives. This is a big step forward."
