Mexico

Rural areas struggle with water scarcity—your generosity provides life-giving water and renewed hope.

About Mexico

Mexico, a country of vibrant culture and diverse landscapes, faces a significant challenge – ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for all. Despite national progress, many rural and marginalized urban areas still lack these essential services. In Mexico, where safe water is often a luxury, Living Water International plays a vital role in addressing this issue.

Oaxaca

Our work

Since 2004, Living Water International has been on a mission in Mexico, starting in the northeast states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosi. Our initial efforts centered on small water projects and spreading the gospel through missionary partners. Over time, we expanded our reach to include Chiapas, Guerrero, and Puebla. In 2010, a strategic shift led us to comprehensive programs, incorporating complex water systems, hygiene and sanitation education, community engagement, and gospel proclamation. We also intensified our focus on Mexico’s historically marginalized southern regions, among the country’s poorest.

Our commitment to safe water access is unwavering. We implement diverse water solutions tailored to the unique needs of each community, ranging from pipeline installations to spring catchments. These projects are more than infrastructure; they empower communities with essential resources and knowledge. We prioritize training water committees in maintenance and operation, ensuring sustainability. Regular quality testing verifies the safety of these water sources, guaranteeing clean, reliable water for all.
Hygiene and sanitation are the cornerstones of public health. To promote healthier habits, we employ the Community Care Group (CCG) approach, where volunteers share lessons on proper handwashing, diarrhea prevention, and more. In schools, we engage students and parents, reducing illness and absences. Our “WASH in the School” program strengthens hygiene practices, involving not only students but also the broader community. Through these initiatives, we’re creating lasting changes in behavior that translate into healthier lives.
The involvement of local churches and networks is pivotal to our Flourish model. Together with church institutions and local authorities, we foster initiatives that lead to transformative and sustainable WASH programs. Orality, even in indigenous languages, helps spread the gospel effectively. We distribute biblical literature, promote water culture, and establish church mobilization groups. By engaging communities through their churches, we inspire meaningful change that reflects God’s love.
In the name of Jesus, we share the gospel through our work. Whether narrating biblical passages linked to water issues or distributing biblical literature, our efforts transcend language barriers, reaching even indigenous communities. By making the church a catalyst for hygiene, health, and community development, we create lasting change. We build bridges with church networks and Christian NGOs, strengthening communities and fostering trained groups that redefine their mission.

Long-Term Goal / Vision

Our vision in Mexico is clear – to increase sustainable water access, sanitation, and hygiene services. Leveraging local expertise, we aim to extend these services across the center north and southeast regions, creating both demand and supply for them. We aspire to be recognized as a trustworthy Christian organization, partnering with communities to facilitate access to water, hygiene, and sanitation. By fostering sustainable change, we aim to transform the lives of those in need, one community at a time. Currently, our focus is on Oaxaca and Guanajuato, with expansion plans in the future. Our ongoing programs reflect our commitment to making clean water, sanitation, and hygiene accessible to those who need it most.
